Juneteenth — also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day — has been a tradition in the United States for more than 150 years. The holiday finds its roots in Texas, where enslaved African-Americans in the city of Galveston were finally informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865, about two and half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. Participation in Juneteenth celebrations grew throughout the years as descendants continued traditions in Texas. As African-Americans in the South migrated across the country, Juneteenth celebrations began appearing in different cities.

Brothas and Sistas of Chiang Mai started in 2017 as a weekly Sunday dinner for 5 five Black Americans who met and became friends in Chaing Mai, Thailand. The group has since expanded and welcomes and organizes social events for People of Color who reside or are visiting Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The Democrats Abroad Global Black Caucus (GBC) is made up of Democrats Abroad members of all ethnicities worldwide who are willing and able to advocate on issues important to Black Americans within the United States of America and those living abroad. All DA members are eligible to join the GBC. We advocate for laws, policies, and programs that improve the lives of Black Americans and educate all people on the humanity of Black people.
