Kwai Kwai Kwai – Sometimes I wish I was a water buffalo – a solo exhibition by Maitree Siriboon 6.00pm 16 April 2022 at HEAD HIGH Second Floor

Maitree Siriboon, born in 1983, lives and works in Ubon Ratchatani and Bangkok, is one of the best known Thai artists of his generation.
After completing his bachelor’s degree at Silpakorn University, Maitree caused a sensation with his photo series “Isan Boy Dream” and “Isan Boy Soi 4” and quickly became well-known. His pictures literally went around the world and could be seen on almost every continent, in numerous exhibitions. Maitree also attracted attention with his beautiful, large-scale mosaic collages, installations and performances. In the course of his young career, he participated in biennials and triennials and received numerous national awards, including the prestigious Bangkok Bank Art Award in 2006. At this year’s Bangkok Biennale, Maitree is represented with a large mosaiced sculpture of a water buffalo.
His work can be found in major private collections around the world and museum institutions.

ไมตรี ศิริบุญ เกิดในปี พ.ศ. 2526 พำนักและทำงานในจังหวัดอุบลราชธานีและกรุงเทพฯ เป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินไทยที่มีชื่อเสียงที่สุดในรุ่นราวคราวเดียวกับเขา
หลังจบปริญญาตรีที่มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร ไมตรีได้สร้างความตื่นเต้นด้วยภาพถ่ายชุด “Isan Boy Dream” และ “Isan Boy Soi 4” และกลายเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างรวดเร็ว รูปภาพของเขาแพร่หลายไปทั่วโลกในเกือบทุกทวีป ในนิทรรศการศิลปะต่างๆมากมาย ไมตรียังดึงดูดความสนใจผู้ชมด้วยภาพปะติด (Collage) โมเสกขนาดใหญ่ (Mosaic) ศิลปะการจัดวาง (Installation Art) และศิลปะแสดงสด (Performance Art) ในช่วงชีวิตการทำงานวัยหนุ่มของเขา เขาได้เข้าร่วมแสดงงานเทศกาลศิลปะร่วมสมัยเบียนนาเล่ (Biennials) และ เทียนนาเล่ (Triennials) และได้รับรางวัลระดับประเทศมากมาย รวมถึงรางวัลศิลปะธนาคารกรุงเทพ (Bangkok Bank Art Awar) อันทรงเกียรติในปี 2006 ที่งาน บางกอกเบียนนาเล่ในปีนี้

Curatorial Statement

At 15, Maitree Siriborn, born in 1983, came to Bangkok from a small village near Ubon (Isan) to study art and discover another world. With images of his homeland, buffaloes, cows, rice paddies and temples in his mind, he set out in search of another world. What dreams did this boy have, what did he want? He discovered his homosexuality early on, did he feel comfortable in this mega-city, how did these two worlds fit together, did he feel homesick at some point?
“Dreams freeze when there is no one to dream them,
and before the day comes, they’re gone with the night.
Now we stand here, who of us still knows which way he goes?
When a new day comes, nothing is as it once was.”

Don’t many of us know that?
Maitree pursued his dream and wanted to study and become a well-known artist. And probably at a high price. Not only did his parents have to sell water buffaloes to enable him to study and yes, he didn’t want to disappoint them. Money was always tight at that time. But eventually he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Silpakorn University and quickly became known with photographic series like “Isan Boy Dream” and “Isan Boy Soi 4”, also internationally. In addition, he also created mosaic collages, installations, which, just like his performances, feature and process themes from his native Isan.
And he was an artist through and through, breaking a taboo with his photo series, as a matter of course, showing himself half-naked in front of the camera in clearly homoerotic poses, when he was in his early or mid-20s, such shots had not been seen in Thai art before.
The glitter of the temple roofs gave way to the glitter of the disco ball and Maitree plunged into the nightlife of a unique metropolis.
Silom Soi 4, Bangkok’s gay hotspot, became his new playground, here he came to have fun but also to make art, reflecting that people came here to fulfil a dream of a new exciting life or a dream for one night. Longing was felt and also an excitement for touch and the illusionistic idea of being desired, maybe even loved. And that is still the case today. This affected and still affects almost everyone, from the bar boys, very many originally from Isan, the hustlers, gay tourists and immigrants. Even the old men want to have another go after their well-deserved retirement and who could blame them.
In his work from this period, however, the artist was always concerned with coming to terms with his own self in all its brokenness, contradictoriness and vulnerability. This may only become clear at second glance, but then these works have all the more impact.
With the exception of the series “Isan Boy Soi 4”, the water buffalo plays a central role in almost all of his photographic works, and in his mosaic collages and sculptures to this day.
Maitree very concretely and directly, but actually all Thais owe a lot to this animal, which is unfortunately underestimated today. It was the buffalo who, through their hard work, made Thailand one of the most important rice-growing nations in the world before it became the modern emerging economy that Thailand is today. The buffalo has had a lasting influence on Thai culture and the beliefs of its people, and positive attributes have always been attributed to it. Today, only a few buffaloes work in rice fields and their numbers are rapidly declining.
The word buffalo (“kwai” in Thai) is now often used to describe someone who is poorly educated, stupid, difficult to educate or somehow peculiar.
But anyone who has had contact with a water buffalo, seemingly at peace and content with themselves and the world, oblivious and dreaming the day away, will find it hard to resist a certain attraction that emanates from this animal. An animal from which everyone can learn a lot.

Let us dream together the Isan Boy’s dream and celebrate Maitree and his exhibition, before time passes and so much remains in the dust of the road.

เมื่ออายุ 15 ปี ไมตรี ศิริบูรณ์ เกิดในปี 2526 เดินทางมายังกรุงเทพฯ จากหมู่บ้านเล็กๆ ใกล้เมืองอุบล (อีสาน) เพื่อมาเรียนศิลปะและค้นพบอีกโลกหนึ่ง ด้วยภาพบ้านเกิดที่อยู่ในความทรงจำ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ควาย นาข้าว และวัดวาอาราม เขาออกเดินทางเพื่อค้นหาอีกโลกหนึ่ง เด็กคนนี้มีความฝันอะไร เขาต้องการอะไร เขารู้ตัวว่าเป็นโฮโมเซ็กชวลตั้งแต่ยังเด็ก เขายังรู้สึกสบายใจในเมืองใหญ่นี้หรือไม่ โลกทั้งสองใบนี้บรรจบเข้าหากันได้อย่างไร เขารู้สึกคิดถึงบ้านบ้างหรือไม่
“ความฝันหยุดนิ่งเมื่อไม่มีใครฝัน ก่อนที่วันใหม่จะมาเยือน ความฝันก็พลันหายไป ณ.ที่เรายืนอยู่ในตอนนี้ ไม่มีใครที่หยั่งรู้ว่าจะไปทางไหน เมื่อวันใหม่มาถึง ก็ไม่มีอะไรเหมือนเดิมอีกต่อไป”

ยังมีใครหลายคนที่ไม่รู้อีกหรือ
ไมตรีไล่ตามความฝันและอยากเรียนศิลปะเพื่อเป็นศิลปินที่มีชื่อเสียง เพราะการเงินที่ขัดสนในเวลานั้น และค่าเล่าเรียนที่สูงลิ่ว พ่อแม่จำเป็นต้องขายควายเพื่อส่งให้เขาได้เรียนซึ่งเขาก็ไม่อยากทำให้พ่อแม่ผิดหวัง ในท้ายที่สุดเขาก็จบปริญญาตรีจากมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรและเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างรวดเร็วด้วยการถ่ายภาพชุดอย่าง “อีสาน บอย ดรีม” และ “อีสาน บอย ซอยสี่” ในระดับนานาชาติ นอกจากนี้ เขายังสร้างภาพติดโมเสก ศิลปะการจัดวาง และการแสดงสด โดยมีธีมเรื่องและกระบวนการคิดมาจากพื้นภูมิอีสานของเขา
เขาเป็นศิลปินที่ทำลายกฎข้อห้ามต่างๆ ด้วยชุดภาพถ่ายโชว์ภาพเปลือยท่อนบนของตัวเองต่อหน้ากล้องในท่ารักร่วมเพศอย่างโจ่งครึ่ม เมื่อตอนอายุเพียง 20 ตอนต้นถึงตอนกลาง นับเป็นภาพที่ไม่เคยเห็นในศิลปะของไทยมาก่อน
แสงระยิบของหลังคาวัดทำให้เกิดแสงระยับของดิสโก้บอล หลังจากนั้นไมตรีก็เข้าสู่สถานบันเทิงยามค่ำคืนของมหานครที่เอกลักษณ์
โดดเด่น

ไมตรีสื่ออย่างตรงไปตรงมาว่าจริงๆ แล้วคนไทยทุกคนเป็นหนี้บุญคุณสัตว์ชนิดนี้อย่างมาก เป็นที่น่าเสียดายที่ทุกวันนี้เราให้ค่าสัตว์ชนิดนี้ต่ำเกินไป ควายเป็นสัตว์ที่ทำให้ประเทศไทยเป็นหนึ่งในประเทศที่ปลูกข้าวที่สำคัญที่สุดในโลกด้วยการทำงานอย่างหนัก ก่อนที่ประเทศไทยจะกลายเป็นเศรษฐกิจเกิดใหม่สมัยใหม่อย่างในทุกวันนี้
ควายมีอิทธิพลมาอย่างยาวนานต่อวัฒนธรรมไทยและความเชื่อของชาวไทย และมีคุณลักษณะที่ดีเสมอมา ปัจจุบันมีควายเพียงไม่กี่ตัวที่ทำงานในนาข้าวและมีจำนวนลดลงอย่างรวดเร็ว
คำว่ากระบือ (“ควาย” ในภาษาไทยทั่วไป) ปัจจุบันมักใช้เพื่ออธิบายคนที่มีการศึกษาต่ำ โง่ ยากเกินเรียน หรือมีลักษณะเฉพาะอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง
แต่ใครก็ตามที่ได้สัมผัสกับควาย สัตว์ซึ่งดูสงบสุขและพึงพอใจกับตัวเองและสิ่งรอบข้าง ไม่คิดอะไรและฝันไปวันๆ จะพบว่าเป็นการยากที่จะต้านทานเสน่ห์ดึงดูดบางอย่างจากสัตว์ชนิดนี้ สัตว์ที่ทุกคนสามารถเรียนรู้จากมันอย่างมากมาย
