Young Egyptians use graffiti, new music and art to enlighten their fellow citizens and keep the revolutions of the Arab Spring alive against the odds.

ART WAR is the story of young Egyptians who, through art and enlightenment, and inspired by the Arab Spring, use their creativity to salvage the revolution. Using graffiti murals and rebellious music and films, they inspire the youth culture around the world and throughout the streets of conquered Egypt.
The film follows revolutionary artists through 2 years of post-revolutionary anarchy, from the 2011 Arab Spring until the final 2013 Parliament election. It describes the proliferation of creativity after Mubarak’s fall, showing how these artists learn to use art in new ways–as a weapon to fight for their unfinished revolution.
For street artist AMMAR, the spirit of freedom and tolerance springs from the Egyptian Sufi festival, extending to Tahir Square where he broadcasts street fighting directly onto houses’ façades. He begins with “wanted” graffitis of a corrupt police sniper and later, paints the anti-Islamic, naked blogger, ALIAA. Since then, the policeman has been arrested and ALIAA endures death threats from abroad–her naked 21-year-old body a weapon against political Islam.
AMMAR develops graffiti as an ART WAR weapon, using an entire street in Tahrir Square for his wall newspaper. Through destruction and further graffiti layers, the revolution’s story has been emotionally and visually reflected. AMMAR’s iconographic, martyred angel wings are adapted for thousands to see. He has since become a media celebrity, and the art of graffiti has become part of the Egyptian youth culture.
Electro-punk singer BOSAINA lives aggressively through her radical individuality and female sexuality–thus delving head first into an Islamicized, conservative society.
In 2011, graphic designer GANZEER created a famous graffiti mural of a tank—today, every Cairo taxi driver knows its location. GANZEER created the Mad Graffiti Week, and with thousands of social network followers, distributed his cartoons both online and in the subway. His stylish works are downloaded and reproduced as t-shirts, posters, and stencils. As GANZEER’s work spreads, his work becomes a reflection of the populace.
RAMY came to Cairo from a small town with his guitar, having since composed songs from the slogans of demonstrators. Thus, he became the lead singer of the revolution for millions in Tahir Square.
For writer HAMED ABDEL SAMAD, these two years are only the opening of a play.
Immanuel Kant wrote that it doesn’t matter if a revolution succeeds or fails. A people who feel the taste of freedom, lose their fear, and overthrow a dictator, will not forget this experience…

The dead martyrs of the revolution dominate our heroes’ art. The artists salvage the spirit of the revolution, sailing on Pharaoh’s solar ship through the downfall of the Islamic world, from death to the shores of a new life…”
